COVID-19: Marion health officials seeing positive trends
COVID-19 cases, as well as coronavirus-related hospitalizations, ICU admissions and ventilator use, have been declining significantly in recent weeks, according to Florida Department of Health in Marion County officials.
Mark Lander, the administrator of the local health department, addressed the Marion County Commission on Tuesday with his bi-monthly update. He said 31,000 residents have received their first COVID-19 vaccinations and 4,170 have received their first and second doses.
Though the weekly trend shows a decline, there has been a rise in recent days of current hospitalizations and ICU admissions related to COVID-19.
Current hospitalizations have risen from 114 on Jan. 29 to 132 on Tuesday; the record was 152 a few weeks ago. The number of people in the ICU with COVID-19 jumped from 17 on Jan. 29 to 27 on Tuesday, according to state data.
Marion County School Board members urged parents and students to keep masking up and follow CDC recommendations after local health officials reported an in-school spread of COVID-19 cases for the first time.
Until Tuesday night, board members have said that none of the cases involving students and staff appeared to have been from contact at school. Instead, those cases were likely contracted while the students and staff were at home. I was informed today that there were several cases that (are likely) classroom spread at one of the high schools, Mark Lander, the Florida Department of Health administrator for Marion County, said of West Port High School.
