PROVIDENCE The iconic Boston Marathon is typically the biggest event in running, casting a shadow over other marathons in other large cities.
Even the rescheduling of the storied race, from Patriots Day to Oct. 11, is unlikely to change that this year.
But the schedule change contributed to the unusual backdrop for the 2021 Providence Marathon, which drew almost 1,700 runners to downtown Providence on Sunday morning.
The gathering of runners competing in a marathon, a half-marathon and a 5-kilometer run amounted to one of the biggest local events yet on the back stretch of the pandemic.

A few months into the new administration, the federal government is off to a roaring start on climate change. President Biden signed executive orders related to climate change in his early days in office, and the White House just introduced a proposal that elevates climate solutions alongside infrastructure and job goals.
The latest exciting development in climate policy is the introduction of legislation called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 2307). The bill hit the House of Representatives on April 1, led by Florida Democrat Rep. Ted Deutch and 28 original cosponsors. We hope Rep. Peter DeFazio will join his colleagues in cosponsoring this important bill soon.
COVID-19 vaccinations are at the give-away stage throughout Comal County, which closed its signup list earlier this week and plans its 23rd and 24th mass vaccine clinics next week.
Cheryl Fraser, public health director reporting to county commissioners on Thursday, said 96,943 shots have been distributed, with 60,467 having received at least one dose of the vaccine and 41,465 have received their second inoculations against the coronavirus.
Fraser said she was âparticularly proudâ that 67.68% of seniors 65 and older (21,627) have received at least one dose and 56.13% (16,394) have received both shots of the vaccine.Â
âThat is our most vulnerable group,â she said.
Fraser estimated the public health office has administered more than 30,000 doses, accounting for 32.98% of total county vaccinations. She said the county conducted its fifth and sixth satellite clinics this week.
So, what’s the plan?
Words fail to capture my relief that Jeff Bridich is no longer calling the shots for the Rockies. Hopefully, the era of paying sub-par free agents who are past their prime big bucks is over. Hopefully, the era of treating superstars like garbage (see Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado) or not recognizing them (DJ LaMahieu) is over. And one can only hope the condescending attitude that the front office knows best and should not be questioned is over.
The only problem is that with the Rockies front office, it’s hard to differentiate anyone’s decisions from Dick Monfort’s. How much of this is Bridich’s fault and how much is Monfort’s? Did Bridich bamboozle Monfort into bad decisions? Were they a Lloyd-and-Harry duo with a competitive debate on who is dumb and who is dumber? Or does it all come down to the micromanaging owner?
