Graves is taking over for Mark Rees, who officially retired last week.  Rees had officially been hired by the town back in December 2015 after a lengthy and public candidacy process.  Altogether, he served 42 years in municipal management.  As explained at the Jan. 4 Board of Selectmen meeting, a permanent town administrator will be in place sometime between the end of January and the middle of February.  A screening committee was formed by the town to accept applications and conduct interviews for a permanent replacement for Rees.  “Interviews are going on currently. We’re not a million miles away, but we’re not super close either,” said Dan Freitas, board chair.

Campaign 21 taking shape in Aspen for council, mayor

in the city of Aspen is shaping up as 10 candidates for three seats are beginning to present their platforms and establish their strategies to win votes. And during a pandemic, campaigning is going to look and feel different from previous elections. There won’t be as much face-to-face interaction, door knocking and in-person fundraisers due public health orders aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19. “Out of respect for people, I will not go door-to-door,” said Aspen Mayor Torre, adding his fundraising efforts also will look different. “In-person, multi-person gatherings will not be the same.” Torre is running against Lee Mulcahy, who is in a yearslong legal battle with local government over his eligibility to live in his deed-restricted, subsidized home at Burlingame Ranch.

Audit of Fairhaven Building Department to help standardize permit process

Audit of Fairhaven Building Department to help standardize permit process Daniel Schemer FAIRHAVEN A recent audit did not turn up numbers regarding possible lost revenue from building and permit fees, but it did reveal other issues in the Building Department. The Board of Selectmen previously had discussed that revenue from the Building Department for 2019 and much of 2020 was down substantially from previous years, so the town hired an accounting firm to investigate these concerns. At the Dec. 21 selectmen meeting, the board discussed the findings from an audit conducted by CPA firm Melanson Heath. Representative Zack Ventross from Melanson Heath attended via Zoom for the presentation. Ventross stated his firm was engaged by the town to “review departments’ internal controls” and “also develop expectations of revenue in departments and help improve internal auditing processes.”
