The Department of Homeland Security is moving ahead with tests of a commercial portable passive radio monitoring system that can find suspect cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices at field locations.
DHS Science and Technology directorate s Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP) awarded Bastille Networks a Phase 5 other transaction agreement to continue evaluating the company s Flyaway Kit that can sniff out potentially intrusive wireless devices.
Bastille Networks said it has been selling the system to the Department of Defense and the federal intelligence community, but it received Federal Communications Commission approval to roll it out for civilian use in early 2020.

The initial ordeal of adapting to the pandemic IT environment has evolved into a speedier and focused view of system modernization at federal agencies, according to some federal CIOs.
That initial wave of setting up laptops and building remote work systems was stressful, but it may have advanced federal IT modernization efforts by years, according to Stuart McGuigan, CIO of the U.S. State Department s Bureau of Information Resource Management.
The pandemic, he said in remarks during a Dec. 10 ATARC IT modernization summit, has accelerated modernization at his agency by five years, with the adoption of collaborative tools and a more utilitarian view of new technology.

The General Services Administration is continuing to develop a civilian version of the Pentagon s Defense Enterprise Office Solutions (DEOS) blanket purchase agreement for cloud-based productivity tools. The Defense Department s contact vehicle supplies Microsoft 365 cloud-based email, productivity and communications apps. A GSA official explained in a Dec. 9 virtual event hosted by AFFIRM that a Civilian Enterprise Office Solutions (CEOS) contract requires a different approach. Agencies are much different in how they’re federated compared to the DOD, Allen Hill, acting deputy assistant commissioner for category management in the Federal Acquisition Service s Office of Information Technology Category, said. That takes more planning. You can t just put in an acquisition vehicle and everybody gets in line. We’re taking a more strategic approach of what types of services to include in CEOS.
