Josef Newgarden finally managed to break 2021’s Team Penske curse during Sunday’s IndyCar race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Whether luck was on his side, his skill finally triumphed, or he had some extra good vibes due to the fact that this weekend signals Team Penske’s 50th anniversary since its first-ever win, the driver finally took the race win he’s been so close to nabbing several times this year.

LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) – On the final lap of warmup before the IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Josef Newgarden heard “an audible vibration” in his engine that concerned him enough to alert his team.
Had he cut his warmup one lap short, another race weekend might have been ruined.
Team Penske and Chevrolet pulled Newgarden’s engine ahead of Sunday’s race, saving him from a potentially disastrous third consecutive defeat. Instead, he snapped his streak of late race misfortunes and won for the first time this season – earning the first IndyCar victory of the year for Team Penske on the same weekend the storied organization celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first win.

Josef Newgarden started to have late-race troubles at Mid-Ohio as Chip Ganassi Racing s Marcus Ericsson made up nearly three seconds in the closing laps Sunday.
Newgarden jumped up in the IndyCar point standings with the win, but remains a 69 (more than a full race win would earn him) points behind points leader Alex Palou.
The NTT IndyCar Series next races for the first time ever in a street course event in downtown Nashville on August 8. The race is less than 20 miles from where Newgarden grew up.
