Amazon to build large warehouse on Sturbridge Road in Charlton

CHARLTON – Amazon plans to build a 1 million-square-foot warehouse on about 100 acres at 53 Sturbridge Road.
Bluewater Property Group and Bay Colony Property Group described the project to selectmen in April. But until a selectemen s meeting Tuesday, the name of the would-be tenant was not publicly confirmed.
In April, the lawyer representing the project, Mark Donahue of Fletcher and Tilton, said the project, for an unnamed tenant, would be a $300 to $400 million investment that would bring more than 1,000 full-time jobs to the area.
At the time, he said the project hinged on the town amending its zoning bylaw to increase the 50-foot maximum building height in the business enterprise park zone to 110 feet. He said the tenant uses specialized technology for material handling which requires greater building heights and multiple stories.

VICTORIA A Canadian warship has seized an estimated $23 million in heroin and methamphetamine off the coast of Oman, a record-setting haul for the multinational Combined Maritime Forces coalition that was founded in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Victoria-based frigate HMCS Calgary intercepted two vessels suspected of smuggling drugs on the Arabian Sea on April 23 and 24. A search of the first vessel turned up 1,286 kilograms of heroin – the most ever seized by a coalition vessel – while a search of the second boat yielded 360 kilograms of methamphetamine, according to a statement from the Combined Maritime Forces. The U.S.-led maritime coalition says the combined value of the drugs is over $23.2 million, adding that drug-trafficking profits in the region are often used to finance terrorism.
