It has been a long weekend, but we now have all the results from Thursday s local elections.
Voters went to the polls in Bristol and beyond on May 6 in what was dubbed Super Thursday, one of the biggest sets of local elections for many years.
On Friday evening the race to become Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner was won by Conservative Mark Shelford.
On Saturday afternoon, it was declared that Dan Norris had been elected the next Combined Authority Mayor for the West of England (WECA) and it was later announced that Marvin Rees had been re-elected as the Mayor of Bristol.
THE Conservative candidate has become the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset. Mark Shelford, who was an army officer for 30 years, was elected as PCC yesterday (May 7) with 161,319 votes. A huge responsibility has been placed on my shoulders and I am very humbled that local people have given me their votes, said Mr Shelford. I absolutely relish the chance to get stuck in and make a difference in Avon and Somerset. Mr Shelford was former deputy leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council. Before the election, he said his main goal would be to prevent crime before it happens .
At least 20 PCC results were announced out of a total of 39, with 16 victories for Tory candidates against four for Labour. Formerly safe Labour seats in northern England lost to Tories.
Norris won 125,482 votes, ahead of his Tory opponent, Samuel Williams, who took 85,389. Norris replaces Conservative Tim Bowles, who stepped down.
Speaking after the result was declared on board Isambard Kingdom Brunelâs steamship SS Great Britain in Bristol, Norris said: âIâm very proud of our region. But it could be even better. I want to thank Keir Starmer, who has unlocked this election for Labour in the west of England.
âWithout him and his skills, his determination and him being who he is, we could not have got this result. People were able to listen to our arguments and be persuaded by them because of Keir Starmer.
