Coronavirus cases fell in Oregon for a second consecutive week as the state appears to be entering a new, more hopeful phase of the pandemic. More than 2 million Oregonians are now at least partially vaccinated, and new modeling indicates fewer coronavirus cases in the weeks ahead. Hospitalizations have trended down, April saw the lowest death total in months, and state officials have outlined plans to lift most business restrictions and end mask requirements for people who are fully vaccinated.

The full extent of the changes remains unclear, but it appears officials plan to extend it to businesses once new guidance can be drafted. “Going forward, fully vaccinated individuals in Oregon will generally not have to wear masks or practice physical distancing indoors or outdoors, with exceptions,” Charles Boyle, a spokesperson for the governor, said in a statement. “However, we realize that businesses and other venues will not have had time to update their policies in the last few hours,” he added. “We’d ask fully vaccinated Oregonians for their patience, and to comply with posted mask and physical distancing regulations while Oregon’s guidance is being updated.”

The Oregon Health Authority on Friday reported eight COVID-19 deaths and 844 coronavirus cases, with the state’s case trajectory continuing a slow descent. Oregon is averaging 739 cases a day over the past week, down 12% from the April 27 spring peak. Active hospitalizations among people with COVID-19 also sank for a fourth day in a row, down nearly 8% since peaking earlier this month. Despite those signs of optimism, coronavirus spread “remains a source of concern,” Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the state’s health officer and epidemiologist, said in a recorded video Friday. Oregon’s test positivity rate for the past week remains above 6% – meaning six out of every 100 tests return a positive result – exceeding the state’s goal of 5%.
