While Pixar certainly has a brand people trust and recognize, I think it’s fair to say no animation studio has as consistent an output with as wide an appeal as Studio Ghibli. Their films, and specifically those of genius co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, were for a long time some of the only Japanese animated films to find major success and wide acclaim from Western audiences. That said, they’ve certainly felt the pressure to join the 3D CG animation age. Their first endeavor in this arena is
Earwig and the Witch; sadly, it’s a letdown in just about every arena.

January of 2021 was tumultuous to say the least. Even with riots at the Capitol, an inauguration, a battle between Redditors and Wall Street and more, I still found a way to watch some good TV and movies. Most of what I watched wasn’t brand new, as I turned to my growing Blu Ray collection for some rewatches as well as continuing some series I started last year.
As I sadly haven’t been able to go to a movie theater since September, I found myself watching a lot of spectacle action movies, like “Top Gun” and “Fast Five,” while at the same time looking for some good animation and comedies. Here are a few of the great things I watched in January.

How France s Lupin became the surprise Netflix hit of the season Adrian Horton
The greatest trick by Lupin, a new French series on Netflix, is disguising substantiveness in plain sight. The show, created by the British showrunner George Kay and inspired by the beloved French character Arsène Lupin, packages over 115 years of inspiration (dating back to the character’s invention by writer Maurice Leblanc in 1905) in a slick, swift escape easily binged in a day. Its star, the French actor Omar Sy, towers over his scene partners, perpetually unreadable yet brimming with charisma; his character, Assane Diop, is a con man with a heart of gold able to turn his outsized presence into an uncatchable master of deception.
