Co-op, Plymouth Street, Walney A shoplifter who stole items from a supermarket became addicted to alcohol at the age of 12, a court heard. David Michael McMurray was sentenced for stealing alcohol from the Co-op in Walney s Plymouth Street. The 41-year-old admitted stealing a bottle of wine and cans of cider worth £12 when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates Court. Prosecutor Lee Dacre said it happened on July 6. At 5.20pm he entered the Co-op on Walney, he said. He picked up some wine and put it in a carrier bag. He then picked up four cans of Kopparberg, which separated. He was arrested and admitted he had drunk the alcohol.
Credit cards A MAN accused of using someone else s bank card to fund an alcohol and gambling binge has appeared in court. Nathan Beckman is alleged to have used the card to spend or withdraw more than £2,000. The 30-year-old faced 17 charges when he appeared before South Cumbria Magistrates Court. He is due to stand trial accused of committing fraud. The defendant, of Roose Road in Barrow, is alleged to have committed the offences between January 16 and 20. Among the charges levelled against him, he is accused of spending £468.50 at the Furness Railway pub in Barrow between around 12.30pm and just before midnight on January 17.
The scales of justice Carl Michael Radford admitted drink driving on a Cartmel road on May 29. The 37-year-old was said to have had 76 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, over the limit of 35. At South Cumbria Magistrates Court, Radford, of Rufford Road in Southport, was disqualified for three years and told to complete 50 hours of unpaid work.

Police officer A KENDAL woman was sentenced to a curfew after she admitted assaulted a police officer Rhiannon Stewart used threatening or abusive words to cause alarm of distress in Barrow on May 28. On the same day, the 23-year-old assaulted police officer Liam Poole and damaged a pillow and mattress belonging to Cumbria Police. The defendant, of Lound Road in Kendal, pleaded guilty to the offence at South Cumbria Magistrates Court. She was sentenced to a curfew keeping her home at between 5pma and 7am for 16 weeks. She was told to pay £75 compensation to the officer and fined £200.
