Sarah Townsend Cumbria County Council is to reconsider its decision to approve plans for a coal mine on the coast near Whitehaven, after receiving new information on the UK’s climate change targets. Developer West Cumbria Mining wants to develop a metallurgical, or coking, coal mine at a 689-acre site on the St Bees coast. The £165m proposal includes mineral extraction over 50 years at the site, along with the refurbishment of two existing coal drifts leading to new drifts underground; coal storage and processing buildings; offices and other related buildings; an access road; ventilation, power and water infrastructure, and landscaping.

Cumbria County Council is set to reconsider its decision to approve plans for the controversial Woodhouse Colliery in Cumbria, in order to take into account new information in the Climate Change Committee s Sixth Carbon Budget. A Cumbria County Council spokesperson highlighted the role of the report in the decision. “This decision has been taken because in December 2020, the government’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) released its report on its recommendations for the Sixth Carbon Budget, a requirement under the Climate Change Act, the spokesperson said. The report, among other things, sets out the volume of greenhouse gases the UK aims to emit during 2033-2037. This new information has been received prior to the issue of the formal decision notice on the application.  In light of this the council has decided that the planning application should be reconsidered by the development control and regulation committee.”

Climate Change Committee questions Cumbria coal mine decision The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has written to communities secretary Robert Jenrick to express concern over his decision to approve a new coal mine in Cumbria. The CCC letter says the mine will “increase global emissions and have an appreciable impact on the UK’s legally binding carbon budgets”, while giving “a negative impression of the UK’s climate priorities in the year of COP26”. It also emphasises that while local democracy “has an important role to play”, local decisions “can have national and international implications”.
