I can’t wait to see how the momentum shifts, or if it does at all, when Trey Lance throws in front of the 49ers next Monday.
Worst pick: Reuben Foster | Round 1 (No. 31), 2017
Drafting Solomon Thomas No. 3 overall and Reuben Foster later in the first round of 2017 got the Lynch/Kyle Shanahan era off to a messy start, before George Kittle fell to them in the fifth round. The 2018 class included tackle Mike McGlinchey and linebacker Fred Warner, while 2019 picks Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel helped the team get to a Super Bowl. Brandon Aiyuk, a 2020 first-rounder, looks like another foundational piece. Since the 2017 misfires, the 49ers have mostly made their premium picks count.

Joe Montana s QB GOAT case starts here. At the peak of his powers at age 33, the 49ers icon was on his own tier in 1989. His completion percentage (70.2), yards per attempt (9.1) and passer rating (112.4) look confusing when compared to his peers. Apex Jerry Rice (17 TDs), Roger Craig and John Taylor made 1989 the West Coast Offense s masterwork, despite Bill Walsh having retired after the 88 season. The defense ranked third, too. The 49ers went 14-2, losing by five total points, and obliterated the Vikings, Rams and Broncos by a 126-26 margin in the playoffs. George Seifert s debut team may be the NFL s best ever.
Let s get to it:
MATTHIAS NOLDER FROM MILWAUKEE, WI: In the final regular season game against the Browns, Mason Rudolph, in my opinion, was dropping dimes on the Browns defense left and right. Has Mike Tomlin addressed Rudolph s growth at the position at all? Do you think that the Steelers will have him start once Ben retires?
ANSWER: This was Coach Mike Tomlin s answer to a question about Mason Rudolph that was posed to him after the loss to the Browns in the Wild Card Round: I thought he displayed that he took a step in growth and development in his performance, even though it was a small sample size. I would imagine that he is going to continue with that growth and development. We will see where that leads us in terms of what he is able to provide us. I m excited that he was able to display that, and I think it is reasonable for me to expect that general trajectory to continue.

There is a lot of speculation over what the signing of former Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins “really” means for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Is it an indicator that Ben Roethlisberger is going to retire? Is Haskins being brought on board to goose Roethlisberger in that direction? Does it mean that Mason Rudolph is going to be traded or cut?
