The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission has selected 118 individuals for the 2021 class of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows.
Local individuals include: Miya LaBarr of Clemmons; Mary Taylor of Mount Airy; and Harper Ray of Winston-Salem.
Those named as fellows may attend any of the programâs five partner institutions: UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, N.C. State, Elon University or Meredith College.

Westchester Country Day School will donate $1,000 each to five charities, including Beds for Babes â City Lights Ministry in Winston-Salem, selected by students as a result of a school-wide change drive.
Change for Change is an annual project that inspires students in pre-K through 12th grades to collect loose change for the purpose of making a positive impact in service-minded organizations. Change was collected throughout March and the total was announced during a virtual assembly.

Both litter sweeps in 2020 were canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a large buildup of trash on North Carolina s highways.Click the video player above to watch the latest headlines from WXII 12 News.During the litter sweep, residents throughout the state participate in local efforts to help clean up North Carolina s roadways. NCDOT maintenance crews also spend a week picking up litter and collecting orange bags placed on the roadsides by volunteer pickups.Volunteers are given cleanup supplies and orange safety vests from their local NCDOT County Maintenance Yard office.The litter sweep runs through April 24. How about creating $15-per-hour jobs to clean up the disgusting litter that lines our roadways, suggests Donna Somogyi of the Town of Newburgh? That would jive with President Biden’s support for a higher minimum wage in this country that desperately needs jobs, she says.
Plus, I might add, the clean-up could be part of Biden’s infrastructure plan. After all, “There is no Planet B,” as Somogyi’s T-shirt says. That’s why her husband, Steve, has been doing his own clean-up walks for some 30 years.
The state should create a commissioner of litter cleanup, says Jack Flynn of Sparrowbush. Not only would this official design and buy equipment to clean up the plastic bags, cups and containers that make our countryside such a mess, she could order state workers to do emergency cleanups.
