Es ist bekannt, dass Plastik nicht die umweltfreundlichste Materie für Verpackungen ist. Vor allem aber ist das Plastik im Meer eine Gefahr für Mensch und Tier. Es gilt, sich weiterhin dafür einzusetzen, dass weniger Plastik in Umlauf kommt und somit auch im Meer entsorgt wird.
In etwa 12 Millionen Tonnen Plastik schwimmen laut internationalen Umweltschutzorganisationen zurzeit in den Weltmeeren. Es geht sogar so weit, dass durch einzelne Strömungen bereits ganze Plastikinseln in Küstennähe entstanden sind. Hier konnte festgestellt werden, dass die meisten Meerestiere durch den Unrat ums Leben kommen.
