The final two webinars in the annual Horse Management Seminar from Rutgers University in New Jersey are on the next two Mondays of the month.
The seminar, normally a one-day in-person conference, went virtual because of Covid-19. The program was instead divided into three free weekly webinars beginning the first Monday in February.
Each virtual seminar evening features two speakers that Rutgers has considered its “Best of the Best” over the years of having face-to-face Horse Management Seminars, and are topics that are most requested in previous post-program evaluations. Each evening will focus on one topic area and will end with an ‘Ask the Expert Live’ panel with Dr Carey Williams and the evening’s speakers.
Equine Guelph has announced the recipients of its 2020 tuition awards. Victoria Chellew is the recipient of the Roger L’Heureux Memorial Equine Award and Jason Copeman has received the Stuart Stocks Memorial Equine Award.
Selected for their love of horses, commitment to their welfare and desire to learn, both winners will receive two online courses through Equine Guelph valued at $549 each (Certificates are available in Equine Science, Equine Welfare and Equine Business – six courses complete the certificate).
“Horses have always been a great comfort for me in times of difficulty,” says Victoria Chellew. “It is important to me to return the favour by educating myself to provide the best care I can for horses.”
World Horse Welfare recorded a record-breaking year for rehoming in 2020, as supporters “stepped up to the plate” despite the challenges caused by the pandemic.
While the charity was unable to rehome horses during the first lockdown, and had to make adaptations to the application and rehoming processes, it rehomed 356 horses during 2020. The previous record was 350 in 2015.
Deputy chief executive Tony Tyler said it was a “truly amazing achievement”, and down to the fantastic supporters who had offered horses and ponies homes.
“It is also testament to our incredible teams at each of the farms, who have continued to care for and prepare the horses for rehoming throughout the restrictions. They have had to adapt their way of working and, in turn, we have had to make changes to the way people apply and how we process those applications. It’s definitely been the year of virtual home visits,” he said.
