Council plans to regenerate Aberdeen s city centre

© Supplied by Mhorvan Park Opposition politicians have voiced their doubts over a proposed £150 million investment to regenerate Aberdeen’s city centre and beach area. The ruling Conservative and Labour administration on the city council want to use two UK Government funds to help with the multi-million-pound project. Under the proposed investment, a number of projects would be undertaken around Union Street and the beachfront to refresh the area, including the creation of better walking and cycling routes linking the two areas. Now council chiefs want to use the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Levelling Up Fund to make their vision a reality.

Opposition claims Aberdeen residents misled over council housing promise

Opponents have accused Aberdeen City Council’s leadership of misleading city residents over its council housing programme. The local authority’s administration pledged to build 2,000 homes by 2022 when they were elected four years ago. However, the opposition SNP group say official Scottish Government figures show only around 200 have been completed – despite the council being handed extra money by ministers for the project. Torry and Ferryhill SNP councillor Audrey Nicoll described the council’s plans as “pie in the sky”, and called on the administration to “be honest with the people of Aberdeen”.

Aberdeen council houses should be replicated across Scotland

© Darrell Benns/DC Thomson North-east MSP Tom Mason said the housing model should be replicated across the country. A north-east MSP says “gold standard” council houses being built in Aberdeen should be replicated across the country. Conservative MSP Tom Mason – who is also a city councillor – said the council houses being constructed in the Granite City are among the best in the country. The ruling administration pledged in 2017 to deliver 2,000 new homes across the city, and adopted the building industry’s gold standard. In Parliament, Mr Mason pressed housing minister Kevin Stewart to implement the model in other local authorities.
