Game plan: Elevate Western ag issues with new administration

Rudy Sulgan/Getty Images MAKING THE CONNECTION: The Biden administration has been busy with executive orders, but farmers and ranchers also have opportunities on a range of Western ag issues. Water Lines: There are cooperative areas ahead, but farmers and ranchers must be ready to act. The Family Farm Alliance board of directors typically meets face to face once per year at our annual meeting, which has, in recent years, been held in Reno. One of the key orders of business is the development of priorities and initiatives for the upcoming year. This year, we had to make the tough decision to cancel our on-site meeting due to the COVID-19 restrictions in place in Nevada. Instead, we conducted a series of virtual Zoom calls and came out with a new game plan.

Water Lines: Before we welcome President Biden, we tip our hats to the crew that left. And we work to move ahead with the new team. Never in my 30 years of working on Western water resources issues have I seen the needs of our farmers and ranchers being dealt with in a priority manner, through actions directed from the White House and former President Donald Trump’s Cabinet. Many of the focused priorities established by the Family Farm Alliance board of directors four years ago based on recommendations of our advisory committee were tackled head-on by the Trump administration.
