When I was a child, I was a ward of the government.
I remember sitting in a waiting area at the end of a long hallway outside a cold, uninviting office. I want to go home, I said angrily to the social worker who explained, in a calculated manner, that I wasn t allowed to because I now belonged to the government.
Back then, I understood the government to be that office, and I didn t understand how I could belong to a building.

The father of a two-year-old girl lying in an intensive care bed at a Halifax children s hospital says the system has failed her.
The girl was rushed to the IWK Health Centre by air ambulance last Friday, suffering from life-threatening injuries. RCMP are investigating the incident as a possible case of aggravated assault.
Neither the girl nor her father can be identified.
The girl has been spending weekends with her father. He said last weekend, he noticed she had bruises.
