This past year presented so many different challenges and obstacles that tested our strength and resiliency. During this global pandemic, the major changes to the ways we live our lives have impacted our children and their relationships. For example, Parenting Education Programs’ staff has noticed that the pandemic has caused many families to experience higher levels of stress and anxiety than ever before.
May is Mental Health Month and now more than ever, we need to combat the stigma surrounding mental health concerns. It’s important to remember that working on mental health and finding tools that help each family thrive takes time. It is important to focus on small changes each day that develop into long-term ongoing strategies.
HALLOWELL – NAMI Maine, a statewide nonprofit organization providing education, support and advocacy for people living with mental illness and their families, continues to provide online mental health support through ongoing support groups and occasional education programs.
NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a peer-led support group for any adult who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition.

COVID-19 Testing Tuesdays: Tuesdays, First Parish on the Bedford Town Common, 75 The Great Road. Cost: $95. For information: https://bit.ly/3j1yKyy. For the foreseeable future, there will be COVID-19 testing every Tuesday with the exception of Oct. 13. All are welcome regardless of town of residence, affiliation, symptomatology or ability to pay. Residents may register online and will be given a time-slot and number. This testing is a collaboration between a local lab, the Bedford Research Foundation and First Parish in accordance with Gov. Herbert F. Foster Jr. of Falmouth is looking for bike riders to join his effort to raise money for Maple Syrup Urine Disease research through the Million Dollar Bike Ride on June 12.
MSUD is a disorder in which the body is unable to process certain protein building blocks properly. In its most severe form, it can damage the brain during times of physical stress and, if untreated, can lead to seizures, coma and death, according to upenn.edu.
Mr. Foster has raised more than $400,000 since his son Scott died from the disease at age 22 in 1994. Most of those monies have gone to the MSUD Family Support Group as well as a donation to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Jaime Cale, long active in Portland Public Schools matters as a parent, Northeast Portland resident and school district employee, is running as a serious write-in candidate for a seat on the school board.
She is seeking the seat being vacated by one-term incumbent Rita Moore, which represents much of Northeast Portland. Three candidates for the post will appear on the May 18 ballot. Cale, who thinks none of them is the right choice for the seat, decided to run only after the filing deadline had passed.
