A federal food distribution program aimed at helping Vermont farmers and people during the coronavirus pandemic is set to end by the end of the month.
The Farmers to Families Food Box Program will end as of May 31, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which launched the program last year as a temporary, emergency relief effort to help alleviate the unprecedented hunger afflicting the country as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and millions of people losing their jobs.
The program raised objections from Vermont s congressional delegation after the USDA stopped including produce and meat from local farmers and was no longer being distributed by a local company.

Confused about negative PPDs? Expert explains what that number means
Despite negative producer price differentials plaguing the dairy industry in 2020, many people are still confused on what a PPD is and how it affects their milk check.
Marin Bozic, assistant professor of dairy food marketing and economics at the University of Minnesota, was a guest on Dairy Business Association s Dairy Stream podcast and took a stab at explaining the meaning of federal milk marketing orders and PPDs and what to expect of them this year.
FMMOs, which are region-specific, are a collective bargaining tool that ensures a minimum price paid to dairy farmers for their milk. If there were no FMMO, Bozic said, large corporate players like Walmart could artificially lower the value of milk by lowering the buying price of fluid milk.

To mark the 45th year of its food pantry network, the Des Moines Area Religious Council is enlisting local grocery store shoppers in a weeklong food drive.
Shoppers at participating locations can donate to DMARC s Drive for 45 starting on Monday and running through Sunday, May 16. People can drop any non-perishable foods into the nonprofit s red barrels, but the three most-needed items are whole-grain cereal, peanut butter and fruit canned in its own juice, said Luke Elzinga, DMARC s communications and advocacy manager.
