The badly damaged clock tower was removed from the Municipal Building on the day of the fire, and kept in safe storage, so it could be repaired or replaced. An insurance settlement of $3 million has now been paid out and the council has budgeted an extra $1.5m for seismic strengthening and accessibility improvements. Physical work will start next year, but the council is now starting preparation work, including design and procurement. The work is expected to take up to two years, with the project being managed by the council’s infrastructure projects department.
