Ex-NFL Player Herschel Walker Gives Dumbest-Ever Excuse Against Reparations

Title: Victor Trammell for Your Black World | Photo credits: Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Former NFL player and Donald Trump supporter Herschel Walker (pictured) made his opposition to reparations clear to a House subcommittee on Wednesday (February 17). “America is the greatest country in the world for me, a melting pot of a lot of great races, a lot of great minds that have come together with different ideas to make Americans the greatest country on Earth. Many have died trying to get into America. No one is dying trying to get out,” Walker said at the virtual hearing. Walker joined the discussion in the session of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. The group debated legislation that would establish a federal commission to explore reparations to Black Americans whose ancestors were enslaved. It was the first time a panel has been held on the subject since 2019.

She apologized for the comments ahead of the vote, but it was too little, too late. Newsy found she is not the only Republican set to serve on the House Education Committee with a history of sharing controversial, sometimes dangerous views.

McAdams says solar energy bill signed into law

SALT LAKE CITY Rep. Ben McAdams said this week that President Donald Trump has signed into law his measure that will support solar energy research and development, including here in Utah. In a tweet McAdams, D-Utah, said the law will support Utah s clean energy economy and jobs while building a healthier environment. The solar energy measure was originally found in the Solar Energy Research and Development Act, a McAdams-sponsored bill introduced in 2019. According to a September news release, that bill was eventually rolled into the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act, which passed the House that month. It was later made part of the $1.4 trillion omnibus spending package passed by Congress and signed by Trump this weekend.

Why Utah’s Burgess Owens says he plans to challenge presidential election results on House floor Dennis Romboy © Kristin Murphy, Deseret News Republican Burgess Owens speaks during a campaign launch event at Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019. SALT LAKE CITY Utah Republican Congressman-elect Burgess Owens says he’s backing a planned objection to Congress certifying the presidential election next week in order to fight for freedom and because the outcome doesn’t make sense to him. Owens questions how President-elect Joe Biden obtained more votes than President Donald Trump when the president did well with various minority groups. He also claims there were irregularities like 42,000 votes being counted twice in one state.

Flickr The coronavirus pandemic, protests against police brutality and the election kept reporters busy this year. But one of the first big politics stories of 2020 was when the Utah Legislature repealed the new tax law at the beginning of the general session. 2020 has been a year for the Utah history books in more ways than one. To recap the year in politics, KUER political reporters Emily Means and Sonja Hutson joined All Things Considered host Caroline Ballard. Caroline Ballard: Let s start at the beginning. In January, state lawmakers repealed a tax reform law they d been working on for almost a year. Emily, why did they roll that back?
