Actor Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua are moving production of their upcoming film “Emancipation” out of Georgia in a protest against voter suppression legislation signed by Republican Governor Brian Kemp in March. In a joint statement, Smith and Fuqua write, “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access. The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting.” In “Emancipation,” Will Smith will portray an enslaved man known as “Whipped Peter,” who escaped a Louisiana plantation and joined the Union Army in 1863.

(Reuters) - Most CEOs on a call to discuss a new push against U.S. state voting restrictions said in a poll they will reassess donating to candidates who fail to support voting rights, while many will consider holding back investments in states that restrict voting access, according to people familiar with the matter.
Some business executives are putting together a new statement calling for the protection of U.S. voting rights, the latest corporate backlash against moves by Republican politicians to change election rules in Georgia and other states, the sources said.

For reasons that should become quite clear once the details of the project are explained below, Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua have moved production of their upcoming film,
Emancipation. The project had originally been slated to film in Georgia, but following the recent signing into law of restrictive voting-law initiatives by Republican Governor Brian Kemp, the movie’s production has been relocated to Louisiana.

The announcement is only the latest in a series of actions taken in response to the recent actions by Georgia lawmakers. As we’ve previously noted, the new law is one of the most sweeping of the Republican party’s recent efforts to make American elections more “fair,” i.e., easier for them to win by making it harder for the majority of people, and especially Black people, to vote. (Yes, this is the law that includes making it a crime to hand out food and water to people waiting in line to vote.
