In split vote Charter Commission recommends Peggy Rehder s appointment | News

After listening to witnesses and debating in the Wednesday, May 19 Charter Commission special meeting, the commission voted to reaffirm their recommendation that Peggy Rehder serve on the commission.  In March City Council Vice President wrote a letter to Chief District Judge Kathryn Messerich in opposition to the appointment of Rehder to the commission. He said in his letter, “during her past service on the Red Wing City Council, she exhibited unprofessional and erratic behavior that culminated in her resignation from office.” Hove is referring to a 2018 arguement between Rehder and Administrative Business Director Marshall Hallock. The special meeting was held because Judge David Knutson—who was assigned to appoint the next member to the commission by Messerich—requested three things of the commission:

Dean Hove, Peggy Rehder will present to the Charter Commission on Wednesday

A special Charter Commission meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, to discuss objections to its recommendation that Peggy Rehder fill one of its three open seats. City Council Vice President Dean Hove opposes the appointment.  Hove wrote a letter to Judge Kathryn Messerich of the First Judicial District on March 29. The letter states in part, “During her past service on the Red Wing City Council, she exhibited unprofessional and erratic behavior that culminated in her resignation from office. … I believe her presence on the Red Wing Charter Commission would also be detrimental to the professional, orderly conducting of the business before them.”

The in-person events will kick-off on Saturday, May 22 with Shoreline Dance recitals.  Sheldon Theatre Executive Director Jeff Larson told a reporter, “we can’t wait to see an audience inside the Sheldon again, and we’re so thankful to the people of Red Wing and all of Minnesota for staying safe and getting vaccinated at a level that allows us to reopen this soon. With country, rock and bluegrass coming up in June and July, we have the perfect lineup for a long-overdue reminder of how much fun live events are.” Shoreline Dance  The reopening of the Sheldon not only means the ability to see live performances, it is also an opportunity to give back to the community. Leah Adams, the audience services manager for the Sheldon, told the Republican Eagle that the number of volunteers with the threatre is much lower than previously and that staff is looking for more people willing to volunteer with the nonprofit.

Your Question Answered: What is that concrete structure on Highway 19?

The email reads: “On Highway 19 in the valley between Vasa and Burnside there is a concrete structure on the west hillside. It was built a couple of years ago, and it was even surrounded by landscaping. I wonder if it has something to do with electricity? It s been bugging me every time I drive that way, and I m curious as to what it is.” After much help from Samantha Pierret, Goodhue County planner and zoning administrator, Frank Peterson, building official for Red Wing, and Steve Kohn, planning manager for Red Wing, we got the answer.  The concrete structure is a turnaround for Xcel Energy trucks so they can access the power poles from a solar garden that is on top of the hill.
