Reader view: A housing approach that reflects citizen input

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: May 9, 2021 648 As the Edmonds City Council starts to discuss the Edmonds Citizens Housing Commission (ECHC) recommended policies, some of us who served as commissioners and alternates would like to share our thoughts on a path forward. In March, a minority of former housing commission members presented an appeal to Edmonds residents to support the full set of housing policy recommendations of the ECHC (Letter to the editor: Affordable housing for Edmonds – the real story – My Edmonds News). However, in their letter to the editor, part of their “real story” was left out. Of the policy recommendations submitted by the ECHC, some had unanimous support from the Housing Commission members, while many did not. The policy advocating for the elimination of single-family zoning, as we know it, throughout Edmonds had considerable debate and was forwarded based on a simple majority vote.  We did not, and do not, support this policy. So, it was di

Letter to the editor: HASCO agreement approval process undermines public trust in government

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: May 6, 2021 Open Letter to Council President Susan Paine, The Alliance of Citizens for Edmonds (ACE) wrote to you on March 30, 2021 with concerns about lack of advance notice to Edmonds residents when council addresses Citizens Housing Commission (CHC) recommendations. In response, you assured notice of CHC proposals coming before council. Development Services Director Shane Hope promised at her initial overview that each of the CHC proposals would be presented in detail to council for public discussion, allowing the full council to determine how to move each idea forward, if at all. In response to a second email about notice regarding the HASCO Interlocal Agreement discussion by Council (a CHC recommendation) you replied, “As I said in my earlier email, as soon as the CHC recommendations are ready to come to council, we will provide notice through the usual avenues.”

Letter to the editor: Proposed policies would mean a welcome change in housing options

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: March 15, 2021 To the editor: I am writing to share my support for the recommended policies presented by the Citizens Housing Commission. I am so grateful for the many opportunities to participate through surveys and open houses. And, most of all, I am proud of a city that is looking forward and trying to prepare to be a city that is rich in opportunity, community and diversity. My husband and I moved here in 1998. Already Edmonds had changed. We didn’t find any shingle mills here, but there were already a lot of condos. Since 1998, there have obviously been more changes. For example, in my neighborhood, a fair number of classic, charming houses have been torn down along with the trees in those yards and replaced with very large houses and a lot of hardscape. It’s not my favorite kind of change, but change it is. And there will be more, no matter what.
