Last year on Earth Day, the first wave of COVID-19 had us in its grip. Across Tennessee, businesses and schools went dark, church pews emptied, and sick patients filled hospital beds. In April 2020 we could not have foreseen the losses families would suffer in the year to come, or the traumas health care workers would endure.
But on this Earth Day, we have cause for cautious hope. Why? Because major pharmaceutical companies raced â and in one case, even cooperated â to develop safe vaccines. With the boost of the Defense Production Act, vaccine production and distribution ramped up at record speed.
Peter Garrett: An Earth Day gift for your family
By Peter Garrett
A solution to the Climate Crisis that pays families? What an Earth Day gift that would be!
Am I kidding? No. The idea is out there in Congress. It would price carbon fuels at their source and throughout the economy, based upon their emissions. That would, of course, raise prices at the pump or store. But all the money raised from the coal oil and gas producers would return to the economy with “CarbonCashback” dividends going to every household.
That plan originated with President Ronald Reagan’s secretary of state, George Shultz. It is built into the Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend Act in the current Congress. It would cut emissions 30% in five years, and reduce America’s carbon pollution to net-zero by 2050.

It’s easy to feel helpless, depressed and overwhelmed about the recent news of climate-related disasters affecting Colorado. Increased temperatures and drought intensify our vulnerability to wildfires, crop loss, low river and reservoir levels, an ever-shortening ski season, and reduced tourist revenue. Carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere continue to rise, topping 420 ppm in March, despite temporary reductions in global emissions due to the pandemic.
There is a ray of hope on the horizon: growing support for putting a price on carbon. This solution leverages the power of the market to propel us toward net zero emissions by 2050. Economists overwhelmingly promote pricing carbon. More than 3,5
