MissionNewswire) The Santo Domingo Savio Salesian Center in Cartago, Costa Rica, has an ongoing initiative to collect food donated by parishioners and provide it to poor families in the community. Those who wish to donate are able to drop the goods off at the center. Donations often consist of cereals, eggs, canned products, oil and water, among other items. A delivery of the food is made every first Friday of the month to those in need.
Currently, the initiative reaches 40 families near the Salesian Center. The initiative is supported by Salesian collaborators and aspirants and members of the Mary Help of Christians Association, who divide the food into packages.

Salesian Missions launches its annual ‘Loaves and Fishes’ fundraiser to support critical aid shipments to programs around the globe
Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, recently launched its annual “Loaves and Fishes” fundraiser which raises funds to ship life-saving aid to more than 130 countries around the globe. Because the cost of shipping critical aid is far less than its value, donations are multiplied many times over. For every dollar donated, Salesian Missions is able to ship $14 worth of critical goods to its programs. The fundraising appeal runs through the end of June 2021.

Salesian missionaries in Dili-Comoro shelter 3,000 people impacted by floods and mudslides
Salesian missionaries in Dili-Comoro, East Timor, have sheltered 3,000 people who fled from their homes because of floodwater. A flash flood caused by torrential rains crippled areas around the capital city of Dili as well as nearby islands in eastern Indonesia, including the island of Flores and the western part of Timor Island, in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday.
Salesians say that local news sources are reporting more than 160 deaths as a result of landslides and homes buried under the mud. Roads are destroyed and thousands of people have been displaced. In Dili, river water rose as much as two to four meters above the ordinary level. Rescue workers continue to search for missing people and are working to restore the roads and streets in the affected area.
