Ah, spring. The air is getting warmer. The birds are chirping. The 17-year cicadas are planning their assault on us. And, like clockwork, think tanks and policy curmudgeons are cooking up ways to take away the retirement security of public sector workers across Illinois.
That’s right, it’s time for the annual Dance of the People who Think the State’s Commitments Mean Nothing. Sure, countless police officers, firefighters, teachers, and others went to work with an agreement in hand that says the people of the state will pay them X amount of money now, and will provide X amount of dollars in pensions later. That’s the deal; everyone agreed to it. The workers all did their part, providing the services promised, and making their own financial commitment to their retirement.
