Ah, spring. The air is getting warmer. The birds are chirping. The 17-year cicadas are planning their assault on us. And, like clockwork, think tanks and policy curmudgeons are cooking up ways to take away the retirement security of public sector workers across Illinois. That’s right, it’s time for the annual Dance of the People who Think the State’s Commitments Mean Nothing. Sure, countless police officers, firefighters, teachers, and others went to work with an agreement in hand that says the people of the state will pay them X amount of money now, and will provide X amount of dollars in pensions later. That’s the deal; everyone agreed to it. The workers all did their part, providing the services promised, and making their own financial commitment to their retirement.

But underneath, there are signs of problems, areas where partisan overstretch threatens the underpinnings of what some are hailing as the new order of things. Joe Biden enjoys 54% job approval, a good mark for a president at mid-term or facing re-election, but below the 100-day numbers of every post-World War II president except Trump. Biden’s 42% disapproval is higher than theirs and about equal to Trump’s. That may understate things if, as the Cook Report’s Amy Walter suggests, polls are undersampling Republican voters.
