Winter Storm Orlena hammered parts of the mountain West, Midwest and Northeast with heavy snow and strong winds from late January into early February.
Orlena began its cross-country journey in California as an atmospheric-river fueled Pacific storm wrung out feet of snow in the Sierra and other parts of the West, along with flooding rain. For full details on this part of the storm, click here.
Orlena then tracked into the Midwest over the final weekend of January.
On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the coronavirus variant first discovered in the United Kingdom has been found in Westchester County.
There are 18 known cases of this variant in New York state. According to evidence and studies from the U.K., this strain of COVID-19 is said to spread from person to person more readily.
It is the first reported case of the strain in the Lower Hudson Valley.
Westchester also piled up another 1,727 new daily cases Friday and Saturday, according to the New York State Department of Health COVID-19 tracker. Sunday s numbers will be reported Monday afternoon.
According to state data, hospitalizations in the Mid-Hudson region are 1,013 as of Saturday, with 146 COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. The region encompasses Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties.
New York s Big 5 urban school districts saw improved graduation rates in 2020, with Yonkers again leading the way. The Yonkers school district surpassed the state graduation rate and became the first of the Big 5 to reach a rate over 90%. Its 90.6% rate was 2.6 percentage points higher than in 2019.
The New York City schools, the state s largest system with over 1.1 million students, achieved a graduation rate of 78.8%, up from 77.3%.
Buffalo s rate jumped to 76.3% from 64.7% a year earlier. Rochester achieved a rate of 68.2%, up from 63% the year before. Syracuse schools went from 64.5% to 70.7%.
Rosa cited Yonkers strong My Brother s Keeper mentoring program and said the state has talked to Yonkers officials about their work with students with disabilities and English language learners. But she said additional conversation is in order.
