After failed attempts to secure grant money, Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 secured $108,000 from a state insurance fund to pay for firefighters’ special breathing equipment. The fire company recently received 18 self-contained breathing apparatus as well as portable air supplies. Although the pandemic caused Lower Burrell No. 3 and Kinloch (fire company No. 1), to cancel their joint carnival last year, No. 3 made their fundraising goal within two hours of last year’s first and only food truck event.

A volunteer fire department in Pennsylvania that is in desperate need of funds has come up with a surprising way to raise money in the pandemic raffling AR-15 weapons. Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 (Kinloch) said it was down about $100,000 in donations this year because COVID restrictions prevented it from holding fundraising events.

In a year when the covid pandemic has forced many organizations to cancel fundraising events, Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 (Kinloch) has had success raffling off AR-15 semiautomatic rifles to raise money. The department’s fundraising efforts have been down about $100,000 this year, but Kinloch Chief Ted Hereda said each of the department’s virtual raffles of AR-15s has netted about $1,000 with tickets typically selling out in 12 hours.
