Marking a decade of conflict in Syria and in honour of the enduring resilience of the country’s people, the United Nations and Silkroad, Yo-Yo Ma’s non-profit organization, have today released
‘I Wish It Had Been a Dream’: Voices from Syria, a “soundscape” that mixes self-recorded messages from people inside Syria with music.
Throughout the ten years of conflict in Syria, hundreds of thousands of men, women and children have been killed and maimed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Currently, 13.4 million people need humanitarian assistance, and with almost the entire population now impoverished, Syria’s humanitarian needs continue to grow at an alarming rate.

Staging a new season
Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City is streaming the Jazz at Lincoln Center lecture series, “United We Swing: Jazz and American History.” The series begins March 24 with Louis Armstrong and the Explosion of Swing, and continues with a different topic each Wednesday through April 28, tracing the history of jazz and the ways it intertwines with democracy. Dido and Aeneas. A screening of the 1995 film directed by Barbara Willis Sweete who recreated the
Dido and Aeneas set on a sound stage in Toronto and filmed it without the constraints of a proscenium stage and with Morris in his critically acclaimed role. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Morris and Sweete and launches a week of activities including talks with dancers and artistic collaborators. Dance with MMDG classes for all levels to learn excerpts of the work; Dance for PD classes appropriate for anyone with mobility concerns. View here and on demand for one week.

The 30-year-old festival will be powered entirely by the internet and will include three COVID-19-friendly concerts, shown exclusively via livestream on Jan. 23, 26 and 29.
But it’s also a testament to its host organization, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and its ability to think outside the box that this year’s streamlined pandemic edition
