Lionel Hampton: 1930 s-1940 s on Sunday Night Jazz Showcase

Program #324 (April 25 at 8:00pm) Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid- 30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording Giant Steps ) without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a 20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby s Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard s Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite s band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong.

Happy Birthday to Tito Puente!

Happy Birthday to Tito Puente! Nikki Giron Tito Puente is known as the “King of Latin Jazz.” Tito grew up in New York City’s Spanish Harlem and became a professional musician at age 13. He learned to play a number of instruments as a child, beginning with the piano and then moving to percussion, saxophone, vibraphone and timbales (paired high-pitched drums). Tito was growing up during what is known as the “Jazz Age” in the middle of NYC and as many young kids, absorbing all the culture and the music like a sponge. He took music lessons as many musicians start, his start was on piano.  “One of my most vivid memories is playing the Puerto Rican danza, ‘Mis Amores’ for my mother.” Says Puente.

Bob Saget returns to Hard Rock for a pair of socially-distant shows that will unite us in laughter

When Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City announced that big-name comedy acts would be returning this month, just about everyone was excited. After more than a year of lockdowns and canceled events, it’s natural to want to get out and see a show in a real venue. But nobody was more excited than Bob Saget, who comes to town for a pair of shows 7 and 10 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at Hard Rock’s Etess Arena. “I have been literally dying to go back,” Saget says without a shred of sarcasm in his voice. “And I am beyond excited to be reopening the Etess Arena. This is something that I am deeply looking forward to. Normally I would be just doing one show, but instead we are going to do two and split them, with 50 percent capacity at each. And when I hit the stage at the Etess Arena it’s going to be amazing.”
