Kiwanis Club of Lafayette supporting young readers with AR rewards program Kiwanis Club Reading 05/11/2021 and last updated 2021-05-11 23:53:34-04 The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette is supporting young readers in Lafayette Parish. The club partnered with the Lafayette Parish School System to launch a program this year that awarded students for earning points for the Accelerated Reader program. During the year, raffle tickets were awarded to students who meet their AR point goals each nine weeks. Extra raffle tickets were given to students who read over their individualized goals. Goals in the AR program are based on each student s reading level.

The spelling bee is broken up into two bees: one for students in grades 3-5 and one for those in grades 6-8. Typically, both bees would be held at the same time, but in an attempt to follow social distancing guidelines and be able to allow more spectators for each student, the bees are split up and staggered this year.

Congratulations are in order to Jonah Stout who attends John Paul the Great Academy for winning the regional bee. Jonah correctly spelled the word precursor to claim the top prize. He will now head to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando on July 8. The spelling bee is broken up into two bees: one for students in grades 3-5 and another for those in grades 6-8.

LPSS and Kiwanis Club partnership encourages children to read more The more they read, the bigger the chance to win a new bike. and last updated 2021-01-14 23:42:57-05 LAFAYETTE, La. — The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette and the Lafayette Parish School System are forming a partnership to hopefully get children to read more books. The goal of the program is to incentivize students in a new way, amid the pandemic. Normally, librarians and school staff would encourage children to read with promises of free pizza or dance parties, but because of new restrictions, these parties aren t an option. The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette is stepping up to donate prizes, such as new bicycles, at each of the 25 schools in LPSS. To be eligible to win, the students must do the following:
