Since 2017, Chef Jose “Cheo” Ortiz and his sons, Moises and Gabriel, have been making a name for themselves serving Puerto Rican delicacies out of a tiny convenience store in Oakland’s Dimond District. Now, the Ortiz family is packing up and moving La Perla, one of the only Puerto Rican restaurants in Oakland, to a larger brick-and-mortar location in the same neighborhood. The restaurant is scheduled to make its debut at the new location later this month. Ortiz and his sons signed the lease last February, a few weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to temporarily close. Alameda visitors center vandalism suspect arrested [East Bay Times] Jan. 6 ALAMEDA A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vandalism after an incident where a beachside visitors center sustained thousands of dollars’ worth of property damage, authorities said Tuesday. In a statement, East Bay Regional Park District police said officers responded Monday to the Crab Cove center at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach for a report of the damage, and took an unnamed suspect into custody. Park staff members saw the man knock down fence rails, damage light fixtures, throw rocks and forcibly remove signage. During the incident, staff barricaded themselves inside the visitors center.
