County funds $1 75M East End police communication project

The Suffolk County Legislature approved $1.75 million in funding last Tuesday to upgrade police communication equipment on the East End, including a communication tower planned for Jamesport, an area police say has bad reception.  The project, initiated by Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini, is called the East End Law Enforcement Communication Project.  “Improving the communications systems utilized by the collaborative efforts between the District Attorney’s office, the Suffolk County Police Department and the various local police departments here on the East End will improve safety for the officers and community as a whole,” said Legislator Bridget Fleming, a co-sponsor of the bill authorizing the funds.

Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and members of the District Attorney’s Office’s East End Drug Task Force (EEDTF) recently announced the indictment of 12 men who were known to traffic crack cocaine and powder cocaine. The investigation was first launched in July 2020 when there were allegations of 18th Street gang members and other associates trafficking drugs in the Riverhead area using undercover officers, roving surveillance, electronic surveillance, and court-authorized eavesdropping.

DA announces takedown of major drug traffickers who operated in Riverhead

(Credit: Tim Gannon) A multi-agency investigation resulted in the arrest of nine alleged 18th Street gang members who were selling powered cocaine and crack cocaine near the Riverhead train station, the Riverhead McDonald’s and other areas in the East End, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini. While nine of the suspects were arrested and indicted, three other suspects who were indicted remain at large, the DA said. Four of the suspects were ordered held on bail of $1 million cash or $3 million bond.  “This is a takedown of major drug traffickers operating here in Suffolk County, selling crack cocaine and powdered cocaine in amounts of $75,000 worth of drugs each month for the organization.
