HENDERSON, Ky. Atkinson Pool in Henderson will be opened at some point before the end of June once an adequate number of lifeguards and support staff have been fully trained, according to a news release from the city. The pool was originally planned to open on Memorial Day, but that did not happen due to a lack of applicants for lifeguard positions needed for safe operation. The pool was closed last summer as a COVID-19 precaution. Previously, Parks Director Trace Stevens noted that there were only six applicants for lifeguard spots, while 15 lifeguards are needed. There was a plan in place to open the pool with only six lifeguards, but that plan would ve stretched staff to the point that more than one absence among the six on any given day would have necessitated closing the pool down.
