Massive 400-acre project unfolding at Gateway Airport

The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport’s conversion into an economic powerhouse as a major regional airport is coming into sharper focus. The latest huge piece, a 400-acre office-retail development that ultimately will include a new terminal – was unveiled last week to Mesa City Council and at a promotional meeting as officials began fleshing out plans for Gateway’s now vacant east side. Although more details will emerge after a master developer is chosen near the end of 2021, conceptual plans for the sprawling Gateway East project include a combination of first-class office development, upscale “corporate retail’’ shopping and restaurants and industrial facilities.

Relief money spent, Mesa ponders next moves

Mesa’s pandemic relief efforts combined  millions in federal dollars, a redeployed army of city employees and a strong network of non-profit organizations to aid thousands of people in different ways. But the once powerful outreach from Mesa CARES has run out of gas, leaving behind a patchwork of programs to help the needy while a second wave of COVID-19 rages through Arizona. “It’s kind of a work in progress,’’ Deputy City Manager Natalie Lewis. “We spent all the dollars. They are no longer available.’’ She said the funding expired at the end of December and Mesa will not need to return any money to federal officials because “the entire amount was invested in eligible programs and services.’’

From wildfire readiness to aging services, East County Supervisors Dianne Jacob retires after 28 years

When Dianne Jacob arrived on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors in 1993, she received a less than warm welcome from the incumbent supervisors and entrenched county bureaucrats. A Jamul resident and former Spring Valley elementary teacher, Jacob had jousted with the county for more than a decade, objecting to a few development projects in East County. She also campaigned as someone who would challenge the status quo and bring more accountability and community focus to county government. She laid out two initiatives during her first address at a board meeting: one, to bring a citizen-based budget approach to a county that was on the verge of financial ruin and, two, to shutter the El Cajon jail nicknamed the “Styrofoam palace” and instead reopen the East Mesa jail, which was sitting vacant while costing the county about $2 million a year.
