In life, there are moments when time stands still, moments forever etched into the memory, indelible moments that remain eternal to someone. In my life, I have been fortunate that some of these moments were shared with Jackson Mthembu.
I first met Jackson in 1982 in the Ackerville township where we both grew up and as young impatient comrades became active in the civics organisation of Witbank. It is through this unwavering commitment from a young age that he emerged as one of our leaders. His clever articulations, militant and determined strategies, inclusive leadership style and charming sense of humour meant that from the small mining town of Witbank we were able to fight against the brutal apartheid regime.

Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu died of Covid-19-related complications on Thursday, just 10 days after testing positive for the disease.
President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy . He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss, Ramaphosa said in a statement.
Mthembu, 61, served as chief whip of the ANC in the National Assembly from 2016 to 2019.

Cape Town - The ANC and political parties across the board have paid tribute to Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, who died of Covid-related complications on Thursday.
He was 62 years old.
The ANC conveyed âits heartfelt condolencesâ to the NEC memberâs family, friends, colleagues and comrades.
âThe passing of Jackson Mthembu is a great loss to South Africa and to our movement,â ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said in a statement.
âBorn 5 June 1958 in Witbank (now Emalahleni, Mpumalanga), Cde Jackson (62) mostly referred to in his clan name âMvelaseâ has dedicated his entire life to the struggle for a better South Africa and world.
