A large contingent of firefighters from several surrounding towns, the Maine Forest Service and a helicopter have been called to battle a wildfire that broke out in the Oxford County community of Brownfield on Monday afternoon.
The fire was located off Farnsworth Road on Frost Mountain, which is off Route 113. Mutual aid was requested from several neighboring towns, including Fryeburg, Denmark, Hiram, Sweden, Lovell and Bridgton, according to a message posted on the Lakes Region Maine Fire and Rescue’s Facebook page and Twitter account. Smoke rising from the wildfire could be seen from the Eastern Slope Regional Airport in Fryeburg.
FRYEBURG, Maine â The Eastern Slope Regional Airport won t be seeking a long-term lease this year after all.Â
At last July s Fryeburg Town Meeting, the ballot question that got the most scrutiny from the public was No. 34, calling for a 99-year lease for the airport authority. It was the only question to fail (274 for, 374 against, with 30 blanks).
Some said they were concerned by the authority s management of land at the airport, as the authority had come under state scrutiny for clear-cutting trees clearing at Round Pond. Â
The reason given for requesting the long lease was that having to renew its lease very seven years at the airport makes it hard for the authority to get lenders to invest in the airport.
Now the question is, whatâs next?
Does the defeat of the short-term regulations mean the town will be mailing out cease-and-desist orders tomorrow to the 500-odd rental properties in Conway? The short answer is no.
Minutes after the results were announced, Selectman John Colbath said: âWe do not have the information to decide what to do next.â
Added Selectman Mary Carey Seavey: âI want to hear what town attorney Peter Malia has to say. If we are going to issue cease and desists, it has to be orderly.â
Colbath said he believes many people voted against the regulations because they thought within a month there would be properties for lower-income people to buy. âThe reality is thatâs not going to happen,â he said.
