Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says the province is in the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The province has unveiled an R80m state-of-the-art 100 bed modular unit sponsored by Siemens to treat Covid-19 patients.
When the pandemic is over, the unit, will be able to provide maternity care and treat chronically ill patients.
While projections had shown that the third wave would hit the Eastern Cape in July, the Eastern Cape is already in it, Premier Oscar Mabuyane said on Friday. It s no longer a story. As we can see in our province, our [24-hour infection] numbers were low. But looking now, they have grown by 100%, he said at the unveiling of an R80 million state-of-the-art 100 bed facility for Covid-19 treatment.

The Eastern Cape has around 2 000 COVID-19 vaccination sites that have to be effectively manned to vaccinate 4.3 million people by October.
A third wave of the COVID-19 virus during the rollout of the vaccination programme could prove to be “catastrophic” in the Eastern Cape, as there are reportedly not enough healthcare workers.
Jane Cowley, DA Eastern Cape Shadow MEC for Health, said there isn’t enough healthcare workers to deal with “responding to the virus” and rolling out the vaccine programme simultaneously.
CRITICAL VACANT POSTS MUST BE FILLED
In March, the Eastern Cape Health Department announced that the contracts of 8 000 frontline health workers, who would have otherwise lost their jobs, would be extended.

The Eastern Cape Health Department says no one was informed that someone aboard a carrier vessel was displaying symptoms of COVID-19.
That s after at least 14 crew members on board a bulk carrier that docked at the Gqeberha harbour tested positive for COVID-19. We have confirmed that at least 14 crew members tested positive for COVID-19, said Sizwe Kupelo of the Eastern Cape Health Department.

Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize says the emergence of Covid-19 cases at ports of entry are of deep concern to government, adding that the situation is being handled with urgency.

He has confirmed that the Health Department is testing the positive Covid-19 samples of three people who flew in from India to Durban in recent weeks.
In a statement released last night, the department says the travellers flew in on two separate occasions from India, via Doha and through King Shaka International Airport.
