It’s an issue that has divided communities and incited a quiet revolution.
Low traffic neighbourhoods – known as LTNs – have been set up across the country, restricting entry by cars into certain roads using bollards and cameras, with the aim of ending rat-runs, freeing up streets, encouraging cycling and lowering pollution.
But they have a bad side effect in the roads just beyond: gridlock.
Small acts of rebellion have been gathering pace in response. In Ealing, west London, oil was spilled on the road, with flower planters covered in graffiti and knocked over. Across the city in Hackney, heads of cabbages were piled up in front of the town hall in response to a tweet by a councillor. Further south in Brixton, disgruntled residents have been sabotaging the LTN by secretly removing signs.

An unsung army of heroes have been helping to make and deliver meals to vulnerable people this year and Christmas will be no different. Glasgow-based Heart of Scotstoun will today be delivering around 80 meals to people in the community with nearly half of them pensioners. A mass cook off began yesterday to prepare the festive dinners which will also include soup, a pudding and a copy of today s Christmas Eve Herald special edition. Centre manager Amanda Quinn said: The dinners will be ready to collect so people have something nice to eat on Christmas Day and if you can’t manage down we will deliver to those who need a bit of help.
