It’s springtime in Utica, which means plenty of rain, flowers blooming and peregrine falcons hatching.
A nesting pair of falcons, Astrid and Ares, successfully hatched another pair of eggs Wednesday. The pair arrived in 2012 before settling into a nest box on the Adirondack Bank building on Genesee Street in downtown Utica the following year.
The falcons first bred in 2014, said Matt Perry, co-founder of the Utica Peregrine Falcon Project.
“They’ve nested there, the same pair, every year,” Perry said. “So this is their eighth consecutive breeding season at that location.”
Peregrine falcons, well-known as the world’s fastest birds, were previously spotted in the area, but Ares and Astrid are the first documented to breed and rear young in Oneida County.
