Richard Ochari’s journey began when he bought a single stage rice mill and a drying yard of 3,500m2. Today, he has expanded the drying yard to 5,600m2 which at its peak can be used to dry 20 metric tonnes at once every day.

Rice is increasingly becoming the staple food of majority of people. It is being considered the number one source of livelihood for the majority of farmers in eastern Uganda.
The increased production and improving technologies are making farmers gain more from their activities. However, intensive production is equally affecting the majority of smallholder farmers, who continue to lose a sizable amount of their harvest through postharvest losses.

Umeme Limited says there has been a huge improvement in power supply over the last couple of weeks as most of the investments it made last year start bearing results.
Selestino Babungi, the managing director of Umeme Limited, says, “What we have seen is where we have done these investments, the dividends are already coming through in terms of improvement of reliability of supply. You will note that in the period of January through the elections, power has been reliable across the country.”
Daniel Birungi, the executive director of the Uganda Manufacturers Association, says it would be insane to dispute the major improvement in Uganda’s electricity supply industry over the last 15 years.

BUDUUDA DISTRICT, Uganda Davis Mukimba is a UNFPA/ACORD community volunteer who doubles up as a motorcycle ambulance rider for Bukigai Health Centre III in Buduuda district, on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda.
Recently, the district suffered devastating landslides that led to the loss of lives, destroyed homes and displaced people. The mudslides washed away roads and bridges, making it difficult for people to access medical services. The mountainous terrain made it particularly difficult for pregnant women.

A policeman in Bukedea District in eastern Uganda has been detained after he shot and killed a 17-year-old boy.
Constable Charles Okurut commonly was detained Thursday morning after he shot and killed Patrick Otimong, a resident of Ajesa village, Akero parish in Bukedea Sub County.
Otimong has been a senior two student at Sironko Parents Secondary School.
