INSIDE LOOK: Buc-ee s feeds first responders, ready to open Monday

By Erica Thomas, managing editor LEEDS The new Buc-ee’s location in Leeds is prepared to open on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at 6 a.m. The store is full of products and full of smiling faces. The mood inside Buc-ee’s is joyful and enthusiastic employees say they have been patiently waiting to open. Every wall is lined with something different. Candy, jerky, and home decor are available inside the store. There are also pet products and baby items for sale. General Manager Michael Bui said the store is ready to serve the city of Leeds and the surrounding areas. “We’re excited,” said Bui. “We’re happy to be a part of the community of Leeds, Birmingham, north Alabama. Leeds has been fantastic to us so we’re ready to open our doors and show northern Alabama what we have.”

Man killed after pointing gun at St Clair County deputy

From The Tribune staff reports CROPWELL, Ala. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting involving a St. Clair County deputy. Kevin Darion Wells, 56, of Cropwell was killed on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened when a deputy was responding to a domestic altercation at 490 Pepper Road, in Cropwell. The deputy said when he encountered Wells, he noticed he had a handgun. “After yelling numerous times for the subject to drop the weapon, the subject raised and pointed his weapon at the deputy, Sheriff Billy Murray said in a press release. “The deputy then fired his weapon striking and killing the subject.”

ST. CLAIR COUNTY Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting, involving a St. Clair County Sheriff’s deputy. According to a press release from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic altercation at 490 Pepper Road in Cropwell at approximately 10:05 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. Upon arrival, a deputy encountered a male subject armed with a handgun. After yelling numerous times for the subject to drop the weapon, the subject raised and pointed his weapon at the deputy, according to police. The deputy then fired his weapon, killing the subject. Authorities identified the slain man as Kevin Darion Wells, 56. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, a 62-year-old Ohio resident, said the loaded Browning .25 caliber pistol was his grandfather’s and that it had passed to him from his mother. The gun was found during a search at a checkpoint at the entrance to the military installation at about 11:30 p.m.
