Two Ohio Republicans in the U.S. House defected from their party Wednesday and voted to create a commission to probe the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol earlier this year.
Reps. Anthony Gonzalez of Rocky River and Dave Joyce of Bainbridge Township joined 33 other GOP lawmakers and House Democrats to approve an independent commission that would examine the Jan. 6 attack by a mob supporting former President Donald Trump, which left five dead. Members selected by Democratic and Republican leaders would produce a report of their findings and recommendations by the end of the year.
The vote came at a precarious time for Gonzalez, who has been sharply criticized and asked to resign by Ohio Republicans after he voted to impeach Trump for inciting the insurrection. He s the third to be censured for the vote by his state party, following South Carolina Rep. Tom Rice and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney who was just ousted from her GOP leadership position.
