Students compete in state oratorical contest held in Shelby

Shelby American Legion Post 82 Family hosted the 83rd annual State Oratorical Finals competition at the LeGrand Center Sunday.
Four contestants, all winners from their particular regions throughout the state, included Savannah McGlothlin, a sophomore at Burns High, participated. She advanced through local, district, and division competitions to the state finals. The title of Savannah s oration was What Compromise Means to the Constitution.
At Sunday s contest, she was awarded second place, along with a $2,500 scholarship. Other contestants included Emma Hall, who represented Apex American Legion Post 124. Emma took first place in the contest and received a $7,500 scholarship.

Investigators say woman failed to report girl being sexually abused
A woman has been charged with felony child abuse because investigators say she did not take action when she knew a girl was being sexually abused.
Angela Huffstetler was arrested Friday and charged with felony child abuse – sexual act. She has since posted bail.
The charge did not allege she participated in the abuse, but she failed to report it, according to investigators with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
William K. Huffstetler of Kings Mountain was arrested last week, accused of sexually abusing the girl from the time she was 11 until she was an adult, between 2009 and 2020.
Two Shelby men face drug charges
Started in late 2020, Operation Sleigh Ride is the Cleveland County Sheriff s Office name for a focus on drug arrests.
The two latest people arrested in the operation are Scott Preston Shepherd and O Bryan Dashawn Crank, both of Shelby.
Shepherd, 29, of Ellis Ferry Road, has been charged with possession with intent to sell/distribute methamphetamine and sell/deliver methamphetamine. He was assigned a $25,000 bond.
Crank, 35, of Shoal Creek Church Road, has been charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm. He was assigned an $18,000 bond.
