Several Norman citizens said they’re concerned about a lack of transparency after Cleveland County commissioners voted 2-1 to dissolve the county’s budget board in a Feb. 22 meeting.

What does next school year look like?

The Cleveland County Board of Education approved on Monday the calendar for the 2021-22 school year. The calendar will split the year between a shortened fall semester and a longer spring in order to allow students to finish exams before leaving for Christmas break.  School will start on Monday, Aug 23, and end on Friday, June 3, 2022. The fall semester will consist of 83 instructional days and the spring will have 97. The uneven semesters are a byproduct of North Carolina s state calendar law, which requires schools to start in late August and end in early June. School districts across the state, including Cleveland County, have repeatedly asked the state legislature for flexibility in crafting calendars. Advocates of the state tourism claim any changes to the current law would cut into a multi-billion dollar industry which does much of its business in the summer months.

Cleveland County fifth-graders return to school in March

Cleveland County fifth-graders return to school in March Fifth grade students across Cleveland County will return to full-time instruction in March. On Monday, the Cleveland County Board of Education voted 7-2 to send fifth grade students back to school five days per week starting Monday, March 8, for all Burns and Crest zone students and Monday, March 22 for all Kings Mountain and Shelby zone students. Coleman Hunt and Dena Green voted against the plan.  As part of the plan, any family who wishes to remain in remote-only learning can do so.  I m not trying to separate school zones. (The split) is for logistics only, said board member Joel Shores.
