During the COVID-19 pandemic, many local families have been grappling with food insecurity and relocation, among a multitude of adversities. Remote classrooms are challenging to navigate; and Malden Catholic High School (MCHS) sophomore, Alondra Enciso Torres of Revere, aspires to aid other students and their families in accessing vital resources.
“A tremendous number of families are struggling during this global pandemic, so it is important that we help these families,” asserted 15-year-old Alondra. “I cannot imagine how hard it has been for children who are younger and just getting started with school to experience virtual learning without the necessary technology.”

A laudable spirit of giving stirs but canât compensate for gross US inequities

The spirit of caring emanating from a March 28 letter by Gladys Vega and Lew Finfer is heartening in a time of discouragement and divisiveness (âThrow a lifeline for your neighborsâ). Communities pulling together during crises to help the most vulnerable is representative of the better angels of our nature.
Yet we would not need to dig as deep into our own pockets if our country had not let social spending and infrastructure deteriorate. A reason some of our neighbors have no financial security and are especially vulnerable to the pandemic is traceable to government decisions such as massive tax cuts favoring the already wealthy and at least one unnecessary war, in Iraq, that has cost $2 trillion.
