MINNEAPOLIS The Twins center field depth got much less certain on Saturday, when they placed Jake Cave on the 60-day injured list with a stress reaction in his lower back and selected the contract of Rob Refsnyder from Triple-A St. Paul.
According to manager Rocco Baldelli, Cave has a fracture to one of the vertebrae in his back and has been battling pain in the area throughout the season. The pain once again intensified when Minnesota was in Chicago on the last road trip, and Cave was held out of the series opener against Oakland on Friday. It’s not a good thing, but it’s not quite as scary as it sounds, Baldelli said. It’s something we do see occasionally in the game, but it’s something that’s going to keep him off the field for a while.

MINNEAPOLIS Though the Twins newly shuffled top four Minor League affiliates announced their rosters on Saturday ahead of the Minor Leagues scheduled Opening Day on Tuesday, Minnesota s top two pitching prospects won t be in action when play gets underway.
According to farm director Alex Hassan, both Jordan Balazovic (ranked No. 4 in the organization by MLB Pipeline) and Jhoan Duran (No. 5) are still ramping up from injuries sustained during camp and are likely weeks away from being able to pitch out of the starting rotation.
Duran sustained some trapezius tightness early in camp, but he was able to pitch two rounds of batting practice on Saturday, Hassan said. Balazovic, who was dealing with a back injury during Spring Training, is tracking a bit behind Duran and is just now starting to get into live sessions.
Akil Baddoo felt like he d lived this moment before.
When the Minnesota Twins decided Baddoo wasn t worth protecting on their 40-man roster and the Detroit Tigers quietly took the outfielder in the Rule 5 draft in December, his mom, Akilah, made a point of it. Do you remember them questioning you? she asked her son. Do you remember that feeling in high school when they didn t trust you and they had you batting eighth or ninth? Doesn t this feel like deja vu? Yep, her son responded. I played ball, he said.

J.A. Happ wasn’t the only left-hander the Twins were eager to see back on the mound in Monday’s game; reliever Caleb Thielbar pitched a scoreless sixth inning while also making his spring debut in Minnesota’s 5-1 loss to Atlanta at CoolToday Park.
Thielbar missed the first two weeks of Spring Training games with a back strain sustained at the start of camp, but the club appears confident that he can reprise his role as an important part of its relief depth after the left-hander allowed only a Pablo Sandoval single and struck out Phillip Ervin out of the bullpen.
