Rockford Guilford students take lead on Black History Month observance

ROCKFORD For her final Black History Month announcement Friday afternoon, Guilford High School sophomore Kawaia Jackson shared the empowering words of civil rights and women s rights activist Dorothy Height. “I want to be remembered as someone who used herself and anything she could touch to work for justice and freedom, the 15-year-old read over the schoolwide audio system.  I want to be remembered as one who tried.” And then, as if she was taking a cue from the longtime former president of the National Council of Negro Women herself, Jackson added her own conclusion to the announcement.  After saying a tongue-in-cheek farewell to Black excellence because the month was coming to a close, the high schooler urged her fellow students to embrace the importance of Black history every day of the year. 

Ex-cop charged in riot

THOMASVILLE — A Thomasville woman charged with being part of a self-styled militia that organized members to storm the Capitol Jan. 6 is a former High Point Police Department officer. Laura Steele, 52, and five other individuals who authorities say are associated with a group called the Oath Keepers, which includes many former military and law enforcement members, were arrested and charged last week for their roles in the insurrection. Among the others charged is Steele’s brother, Graydon Young, 54, of Florida, who encouraged her to join Oath Keepers in the days before going to Washington, according to the indictment. Although a total of only nine Oath Keepers have been charged so far, the indictment indicates that more than 40 came to Washington on one bus from North Carolina.

National Honor Society welcomes new members

National Honor Society welcomes new members click for larger version) February 24, 2021Gilford High School s chapter of National Honor Society welcomed 27 new members to the organization after the winter induction ceremony. Students in grades 10-12 who displayed strong qualities in each of NHS four pillars of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character were inducted into the service organization during a ceremony on Wednesday night. Inductees, NHS members, and the family members and faculty who attended the ceremony were all required to wear masks and sit socially distanced. Students were recognized for their achievements, presented with the NHS emblem, and asked to sign the club s book.

GHS students part of virtual theater festival click for larger version) February 17, 2021Gilford High School students are preparing for a virtual version of a state theater festival that will showcase their talents onstage as well as in video production. GHS students are preparing a scene from Allerleirauh for the New Hampshire Educational Theatre Guild Festival where they will compete against high schools from around the state. GHS has participated in and hoisted the festival for a number of years. Last year at this time students were preparing These Shining Lives and Snow Angels for the festival when everything was canceled because of the pandemic.
